Sambar Deer

This rather large male walked right in front of the car at Khao Yai NP in 2011. He didn't seem that bothered by the car at all. That said, he didn't stick around for long. I am pretty sure that this is a Sambar Deer stag.

White-Rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus)

A beautiful bird I saw at Khao Yai (Nakhorn Ratchasima) and again recently at Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in Chaiyaphum, is the White-Rumped Shama. It is a stunning bird and sings wonderfully. I could have watched it for hours, but he soon flew away.

Tropical pitcher plant (Nepenthes alata)

A very interesting plant I see from time to time, is the Tropical Pitcher Plant or Nepenthes alata. I spot it infrequently in forested areas and look great. Wouldn't to be fly fly around one, though.

Possibly the end for this little fly!!!

Wild Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus)

On night, whilst staying at Nam Nao National Park HQ, I could hear loud crashing sounds in the distance becoming ever-increasingly louder. Then, in the distance, I saw a shadow. It closed in on me and I hid behind a tree, managing to get this photo. It charged me and I basically legged it to the car and hid. Eventually, he moved on ... I spoke to the ranger the following morning and it turns out to be a young male thrown out of the group for being a naughty! The following year, I noticed that they had erected electric fencing at certain areas of the HQ ... I wonder why?

A wonderfully written sign at Nam Nao HQ ...

Footprints regularily spotted along the nature trails ...

The newly erected sign to keep out pesky elephants at night ...

White-Browed Shortwing (Brachypterx montana)

Right at the summit of Doi Inthanon, I was disappointed not to spot any dragonflies walking around the nature trail. However, I did spot a male White-Browed Shortwing with distinctive white markings on the head. This is the only specimen I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I didn't really have the camera gear to get very good photos. Many thanks to my brother, Paul Farrell, for the ID.

Red Muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak).

I have seen several species of deer on my travels in Thailand and this is a young Red Muntjac or Muntiacus muntjak. Sighted at Khao Yai National Park, Nakhorn Ratchasima, back in 2011.
Many thanks to Joe Hartman for correcting my rubbish attempt at ID!

Green Paddy Frog (Hylarana erythraea)

A fairly common sighting I see on my dragonfly hunting travels, is the Green Paddy Frog or Hylarana erythraea, kindly IDd by Joe Hartman. They are difficult to approach and photograph. However, I was wading chest-deep in a pond in Udon Thani province with my friend, Joe Hartman, and this guy floated by on a makeshift island ... at the perfect angle.
